probably my favorite sequence of all I’ve worked with. this was one of those projects in which I had almost full liberty of doing whatever I wanted with the editing and sequencing. because Melba was so used to showing this body of work in exhibitions, she was used to using the “best” standalone images but in book form there was something missing from just a collection of the best images of this body of work. I asked Melba to send everything she had, different versions and outtakes, and I used them to tell the story of her exploration of these spaces and her contact with this strange set of characters. the result was a long sequence in which people appear, jump at you, then disappear only to appear again later in the book. it feels as if playing in a big unsettling doll house in which one is equally curious, scared and excited.
